Signs You May Have Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a disorder that can result in breathing or sleeping difficulties. If left untreated it can cause lethargy and fatigue in adults and learning difficulty and hyperactivity in children. If you experience any of these symptoms (as well as a few others we’ll discuss shortly) you might want to consider sleep apnea treatment.
Do You Have Sleep Apnea?
Most people aren’t aware that they have sleep apnea. Apart from daily fatigue, they don’t notice anything different. That’s why it’s important to determine whether or not poor sleep conditions are affecting your day to day life. After all, wouldn’t you rather know what’s causing your tiredness—and fix it—than walk about tired all day?
That’s why we’ve put together a list of the signs and symptoms associated with sleep apnea. If you aren’t sure whether or not you experience any of the following, ask a friend to spend the night so they can let you know if you do.
- Do you hold your breath for a few seconds during the night?
- Do you choke or gasp for breath during the night?
- Do you snore?
- Do you wake up with a dry or scratchy throat?
- Do you wake up with headaches in the morning?
- Do you feel fatigued during the day?
- Do you struggle to stay awake while reading, driving, or watching TV?
- Do you have teeth that are worn down?
If you experience any of the above, you may have what is known as obstructive sleep apnea (or OSA). OSA is a breathing disorder that prevents quality airflow during sleep. When the head tilts backward, the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway. This results in poor oxygen intake, and poor sleep. Hence the symptoms mentioned above.
